 Shortwave Overpopulation    2004-09-12 18:11:45 ET

So I turn on the scanner today afternoon (I was scanning this morning. A continuation of last night's scanning) and am amazed that I automatically end up on some french station using WFM (wide frequency modulation) but I notice a voice underlying that transmission which, although I can't hear what the voice is saying, comes off sounding Russian due to the speech patterns. Now I automatically know that it could either be Russian, Czechoslovakian, or Polish so I keep tuning forward to see if it clears up. As I tune I jump the modulations to see if the underlying voice is broadcasting using a different modulation. Well, aparnetly there's not only a Russian sounding station along with a French one broadcasting on that set of frequencies in the 11mhz range but also a Spanish station and an Italian one! Crazy stuff! So I keep tuning on. Eventually I find the Russian station about a 100khz away using AM. And, yes, it was Russian and not Polish or Czech. Later on when I tuned to it though it turned into a British station. Maybe it was the Voice of Moscow?

Oh, and I made a slight mistake. I'm not scanning in 10khz increments. I'm scanning in .10khz increment. I forgot to mind the dot. So thats why I'm only up to 11mhz even though the 2 or 3mhz range was my scanning origin.

Anybody here into shortwave?

I'm picking up something weid on shortwave. It's in the 8.5 megahertz range. 8.5000 actually. I caught it on 8.5002 then moved around a bit.

It's a freaky, weird signal. The strength of the signal varies which makes me think that it's originating from an antenna that rotates.

The signal itself are weird beeps and crunchy distortion which is followed by bits of what sounds like carrier tones. As if it's data being sent. The rhythm of this set is very eerie. It is the rhythms of a steady pace of footsteps. Maybe a tiny bit faster than 2 beats per second.

Now the rhythm just broke. The crunchy distorted beep increased in volume. Burst of carrier followed. Then some normal beats. The static's getting louder. Now the clear beep comes in every once in a while but it's now mostly all crunchy distorted beep. Like a beep distorted by vibration.

This is obviously originating from an electronic device. The short bursts of carrier signal and, as just happened, a pattern of fast beats, seems to indicate a device with the ability to communicate with other devices but not necessarily a communications device. The carrier signal is short which means that the device, whatever it is, only needs to communcate with something else for a second or two. That means that there's not a lot of data being sent. I'll stop listening to it now and i'll move on.

Evangelical Shortwave Spammers    2004-09-11 21:14:44 ET
I'm using a scanner which a friend of mine lent to me to scan the shortwave bands. I keep getting these Christian evangelical stations which sometimes span the length of an entire megahertz! It's insane! All I want to hear are pirate radio stations, weird shit, and number stations.

Anyways, I'm really thankful to all the people saying "Hello" to me in my previous post. If I ever fail miserably in life and am forced to start a cult to supplement my lifestyle I'll hope that you'll keep me in mind.

Anyways, I'm learning random stuff at the moment. After a few years of educational stagnation I'm finally learning how to do stuff. Learning Linux, the phone system, computer security, and soon, hopefully, electronics and mathematics.

Now all I need is a job to fund my studies and experimentations.
