so shake shack has opened up their first (and probably last) location in san francisco, and it's going hilariously badly for them. sorry east coasters: this ain't it, chief.

I never understood the Shake Shack hype. Extremely overrated.

i've never been and have zero interest in going. the prices alone look ridiculous for a fast food joint. if in-n-out can pay its employees $20/hr+ here and still keep their food reasonably priced, i don't see why shake shack, which pays its employees less and doesn't offer as many benefits, charges twice as much for what i'm sure is a much shittier burger.

I'm a big five guys fan. IO is good too it's just not out here.

five guys seems to have a lot of fans, but personally i find them rather overrated as well. they're not bad, but to me they just taste exactly like red robin or applebee's - and they cost just as much, but you get none of the ambiance and no table service, so what's the point? i only really go there if there's nothing else nearby. my folks seem to love them, though.

For years the only times I had Five Guys was when I was visiting my family in DC. There was a FG right around the corner and it was in an older building and ambiance was definitely there. The food was good and decently-priced and I really liked it. By the time they made their way up north and started popping up all over the place in NYC it was nothing more than another fast food burger, only now also extremely overpriced.

i guess i discovered five guys too late 🤷‍♂️ though really, i have yet to find anything that's as good as in-n-out. the only place i've been to that comes close is a one-off joint called nap's grill in montana. there's also a local chain here in SF called burgermeister that's pretty excellent, too. they're about five guys prices, but WAY better food and atmosphere. still, most of the time if i want a burger i just go to in-n-out.

I don't know what it is, I dont consider myself a "foodie," but I've never once liked In N Out. I've given myself a lot of chances to try again, in different locations, and usually at the inisistance of someone who swears by them. Every time I'm underwhelmed. I feel like a lot of patrons are tricked by the "culture" of the place, because seriously it's just kind of a better-than-burger-king burger.

That being said, In N Out dances circles around 5 guys and shake shack. I've yet to go to a shake shack and not get a charred mess of a burger. And 5 guys delivers flavorless garbage, guaranteed. Someone needs to tell those 5 men that you have to do more than just dunk a potato in hot oil to make french fries.

I think it's because my dad took me to so many bars as a kid where the cooks had that weird pub pride in their food, that I have a different pallet for the "restaurant hamburger."

taste is always subjective to a point and nothing is for everyone. i genuinely like in-n-out for the taste of their food above all else - though i'll admit it also does help their odds with me that they treat their employees better than anyone else in the fast food industry as well. otherwise the "culture" aspect doesn't really make much of a difference. there's a local chain called burgermeister here in SF that i like a lot, too. and i'll still go to jack in the box, too, depending on what i want. in-n-out remains my favorite 🤷‍♂️ and i've been to lots of local yokel bars and whatnot around the country too. that one place in montana is the only place i've found that i like almost as good as INO to me, but, again, taste is subjective.

and yeah i agree even mores on five guys' fries - their burgers are one thing but the fries are the most generic tasting fries on the planet.

Taste is subjective but I sincerely do not understand the big deal about In n Out. And I swear, if I hear one more person say "BUT HAVE YOU ORDERED FROM THE SECRET MENU?!" one more time...

Good on them for paying their staff a decent wage tho...

yeah - i'm not an in-n-out fAnAtIc and can understand that they're not everyone's bag. they're just my personal favorite, and i don't understand how anyone could prefer most other chains over them. individual places, and other small local chains, i'd say there's more wiggle room for opinion. just not five guys or shake shack.

i used to order more from the secret menu and TBH most of the regular menu items (outside of animal style once in a while) are better anyway, so i usually just go with those. i'm not a fanboy of anything really - i have certain brands that are hard preferences, sure, but i don't understand people who worship and go all gaga over literally anything <insert company here> does.
