Saturday night was Dave’s first self sponsored art showing. His goal, he stated was not to sell pieces but to get exposure for himself and others. He wanted to generate interest in Gallery showings. He had a small line up of a few artists, he being one of the four.
The night approached. Friday we spent hours transforming the lobby of our church into a gallery. The majority of the Art was created by my Love. Another artist by the name of David Woo had several pieces, Our Pastor lent us two of his landscapes for the event, and there was an anonymous artist who called himself The Art Terrorist. He was advertised to be doing “something” at 8pm on the night of the event “that has never been done in the art world before”. Being the curious individual I am I have begged Dave for weeks to tell me what The Art Terrorist was going to do. I was denied this information. His single contribution was set up in the corner of the stage prior to the time I arrived on Friday. The mysterious presentation was covered with a drop cloth and the promise of “8PM…” was joined by a paint splattered happy face. I fought the urge to peak and worked instead on setting up the rest of the gallery.
By 7 pm Saturday, the gallery was ready. I concerned myself with making sure the evening ran smoothly by keeping the sparkling cider flowing and acting as general go-for and hostess. I really wanted the night to be perfect for Dave. The art Terrorist had not shown himself by ten to eight and I was really worried. I kept asking Dave if we should call him. I was not comfortable with his non presence. Moments later, however, he arrived and everyone’s attention was requested and the presentation was to begin. Dave came and found me in the crowd and pulled me away from all of my worry over whether there was enough salsa and brought me close to the stage. After a few minutes of awkward silence the Art Terrorist, Dressed in paint splattered clothing and cape, entered the lobby disguised by a yellow paint splattered happy face mask.
Through the disguise I could tell easily tell it was Rafi, the assistant pastor. I asked Dave what was going on and he shushed me.
Rafi The Art Terrorist, in an almost Kermit the frog like voice, explained that he was going to change how we saw art. Dramatically he demanded that his presentation would change some people’s lives. He was so certain of his declaration, he said it twice. With a bit of comedy he cut down the drop cloth and revealed a painting David had done of he and I. David dragged me on to the stage and as I was about to get a closer look at the painting, Rafi handed David and ring box and I froze.
The art showing was not his goal. This amazing Love of mine worked for months, unbeknownst to anyone except Rafi, for an event to display the painting of us and to ask me to marry him.
In the painting he is leaning close to me and painting a ring on my finger. The ring presented to me was something he designed and had made.
So... of course I said Yes… well I nodded yes unable to make any sound.
… ok, story told. I promise not to bore with details of every moment of planning.
