A Scene at the Club Seal

He sat there, grey mohair suit, coffee in hand, his eyes slightly shifting back and forth taking in the new comers and the passerby. A girl approached him. She looked interested in him. In something that she saw in him. It brought about a vague memory that would not unravel and reveal itself but, instead, appeared and floated down the stream of her awareness like a closed lotus flower and she realized that if she didn't take action she might never know what it was that was floating away from her grasp. She leaned over, hands under her chin, elbows at rest on the hanging bubble chair in front of the man. She was trying to look interesting, seductive, but the chair swung forward like a pendulum being pushed by her weight. She realized her awkwardness and miscalculation of scenery and decided to sit in the chair instead of accidentally having it fly about like a swingball.

"Hello," she said to him and smiled. He just looked back at her, not saying anything.

"Uhm, I was just wondering, what is your name? You look strangely familiar."

The man kept his eyes locked in on her. She began to feel uncomfortable but decided to keep on talking and ignore the feeling. She stretched out her hand.

"My name is Sue. What do you do?"

"I do nothing. I just sit here and exist."

He spoke for the first time. And the last too, she realized as he looked away from her and began to sit there, motionless, people watching from the shadows.

In her field of vision he began to look gray. First a strange gray bleed from his suit onto his face. Then his whole shape until he was just a grayish silhouette sitting cross-legged on red velvet cushions lining the insides of his ball chair.

The lotus was gone but the stream kept flowing.
